Differences Between a Day Spa and Med Spa
While the overall look and environment of day spas and med spas can be practically identical, the treatments offered as well as the operator performing them are drastically different. Keep reading to determine which type of spa you need for the treatment or service you’re desiring.
Med spas offer medical grade treatments and have a licensed MD on staff. Day spas offer non-medical grade treatments and operate without an MD on staff.
The main difference between a day spa and a med spa is the presence of a physician.
This determines the type of treatments that can be offered. The most aggressive treatments a day spa is able to offer are designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin such as facials, microdermabrasions and superficial chemical peels. Med spa treatments on the other hand focus on more difficult issues such as wide spread discoloration and wrinkles. These treatments include deeper chemical peels, injections (such as Botox), and laser treatments.
Med spa treatments are performed by licensed medical staff (Physician and RN). Day spa treatments are performed by estheticians, massage therapists, nail techs or cosmetologists.
Because the treatments offered in each spa are so different, the training and licensing required to perform each also varies.
To perform medical-grade treatments a physician or RN must perform the service and the physician oversees all med spa procedures. By the same token estheticians, massage therapists, nail techs and cosmetologists must also be receive specialized training and licensing to provide day spa treatments.
Med spas more effectively address stubborn beauty and health issues. Day spas focus on light beauty treatments and relaxation.
You’re more likely to see the difference with a med spa and feel the difference at a day spa.
Med spa procedures are used to address concerns such as deep acne scarring or wrinkles. Day spas specialize in providing an oasis for clients who want to relax and/or receive a lighter beauty treatment. So which one is right for you? It depends!
